SPID Theatre has over two decades of experience advocating for diverse, and youth theatre, fighting for housing justice along the way. Their staged workshop production How To Make Art That Brings Housing Justice is a multi-disciplinary presentation that incorporates art installations, videography, verbatim sound scapes, and a guided workshop presenting their most recent work that led to the refurbishment of Kensal House, a Grade II listed council estate that was in dire need of restoration.

The presentation touches on the appalling conditions many social housing residents are forced to live in due to lack of action and support from councils, and its wide-reaching impact on communities. Incorporating the Grenfell Tower tragedy as a vehicle to push the council to finally listed to residents who have long been neglected, there are many powerful moments in this show. It’s definitely not a traditional theatre production as such, being presented in a workshop style that incorporates audience participation to allow attendees to come together in community and solidarity. It’s an experience that gives hope and devastates in equal measure, presenting such awful conditions people are left with when landlords neglect their duties to keep residents safe.

Reviewing the long fight to fully refurbish Kensal House, giving details on the how and why, there’s a lot to learn and consider in this production. It’s definitely something different to experience, a great presentation for community leaders and those interested in changing the landscape of social housing, an urgent call for action and justice.
