Beyond the Brutalism: Stories from the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate
The Heart of the Estate
The Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate in Camden is world-renowned for its striking Brutalist architecture, designed by Neve Brown [00:11]. While it is a frequent filming location for global blockbusters and high-fashion shoots [01:31], our Estate Endz project asks a different question: What about the community that actually lives there?
A "School After School"
In this documentary, created by local young people in collaboration with SPID Theatre, we explore the "double-edged sword" of living in a Grade II listed icon. Residents share their pride in the estate’s unique design [00:51], but also the daily realities of maintenance issues and the feeling that their private lives are sometimes treated as a "show" for tourists and film crews [01:45].
The film highlights The Arc, a vital community hub that acts as a "school after school" [04:46]. It is a space where young people can escape labels, gain confidence, and learn social skills that aren't always taught in a classroom [04:14].
Bridging the Gap: The Arc Celebration Day
To celebrate this vital space, our youth participants organized The Arc Celebration Day [05:10]. The event brought together "young meets old," bridging the generational gap between long-term residents and the youth of today [07:23]. From sharing stories of what entertainment looked like decades ago [07:55] to dancing and art workshops, the day proved that while bricks and mortar make a house, it is the community that makes a village [10:22].
